When Jan and Maggie hit the road to join their daughter, Fern, for Thanksgiving with her future in-laws, they expect the trip to be a little bumpy. Jan and Maggie are a vegetarian lesbian couple who travel in a vintage VW Bus. Wilson and Olivia live in an 8-bedroom home in a gated community, and they are decidedly carnivores. When these two families converge for the holiday, the tension and resulting humor are drawn out into the open, bringing to the surface not just what is different, but what matters. This delightful southern family comedy offers a heartwarming look at a holiday with a premise we need now more than ever, gratitude and gathering – despite our differences.
Differences: The Story Behind the Story
Years ago, my wife and I joked about what it might be like years down the road when our kids are grown and we meet the parents of their future partners. We laughed over some of the possibilities and cringed at others. Something about this idea wouldn’t let me go, and a story started living in my head of two lesbians going on a road trip for Thanksgiving in their vintage VW bus to share the holiday with their daughter’s future in-laws. This year, I finally took the time to write it out, and it grew from the initial idea into the short story you now can enjoy!
