Writing

Connection, Spirit, and Love all lie at the heart of my writing. Whether it’s my current non-fiction work in progress that’s on finding God in the Wilderness, my novel Broken to Belong, or my poetry and songs – these are the common threads of purpose and inspiration.

Works in Progress:

I’m currently writing a nonfiction book on spirituality and wildness – both in nature and within ourselves. What does it mean to experience God in nature? What can we learn about ourselves, God, and the world? How has our separation from nature and the ways of our ancestors ultimately harmed our faith and spirituality – and how do we reclaim our own wildness? Strong themes in this work include inclusion, connection, social and eco-justice. I’m calling it “Dirt Church” and plan to release it in late 2024/early 2025.

Following Broken to Belong, my second novel (which is well underway) meets Sam at a difficult moment in her life. Things have been tense in her marriage with Jo, and they find themselves alone after the kids go to summer camp. Desperate to save her marriage while also trying to salvage her career and meet a looming deadline, Sam suggests a trip to a beach house, but things don’t go according to plan, and she winds up going alone. When she arrives, she sees a strange car parked in the driveway. Then she almost faints when Mary Oliver opens the door, with Edie Windsor and Phyllis Lyon close behind. Can what she learns from the ghosts of these iconic lesbian women give Sam the wisdom and wherewithal to save not just her marriage, but her sense of self? “Sea Glass” is slated for release in early 2025.

Published Works

My first novel, Broken to Belong was released in June 2022. Independently published and resources with other queer creatives (cover design, editing), this book is a work of love for found family, love against the odds, and LGBTQ+ people living in the South and rural areas. For a long time, I had an idea for a Thanksgiving story. I’ve long loved Thanksgiving, and after years of daydreaming about this story, I finally put it into form. Differences.

When Jan and Maggie hit the road to join their daughter, Fern, for Thanksgiving with her future in-laws, they expect the trip to be a little bumpy. Jan and Maggie are a vegetarian lesbian couple who travel in a vintage VW Bus. Wilson and Olivia live in an 8-bedroom home in a gated community, and they are decidedly carnivores. When these two families converge for the holiday, the tension and resulting humor are drawn out into the open, bringing to the surface not just what is different, but what matters.
